The Newbery Award: A Prestigious Medal for Children’s Literature by Karen Gallagher
In the world of children’s literature, perhaps the highest level of recognition is the Newbery Medal awarded annually by the American Library Association. This award was named after John Newbery, a bookseller in England in the 1700s. However, the concept of the award was developed almost 200 years later, with the very first Newbery Medal given in 1922.
Here are some important factors about the books that have been selected to receive the Newbery Award:
- The book must be written by a US citizen or resident.
- Books considered for the Newbery Award are based on written content only; illustrations are not factored into the decision.
- Some areas the committee reviews when selecting a book include- interpretation of a theme, accuracy, plot, and character development.
Books that win the top award are called Newbery Medal books while the worthy runners-up are referred to as Newbery Honor books. Just to be considered for a Newbery award is a big achievement, let alone winning this highest level of recognition in children’s literature.
