Adoption Books for Children- A Good Way to Start Talking About It

by Karen Gallagher

Good adoption books for children show the way families come together in special and unique ways.  Adoption happens to be one of the many unique paths in which parents and children find each other.  Parents will tell you that their adopted children are a very natural extension of their family, like they were destined to find each other.

Adoptive parents have the important responsibility of talking to their children about how their family came to be.  Parents should refer to adoption experts and counselors for advice on how and when to begin these discussions.  One thing everyone will agree upon, however, is that reading good adoption books with your children is an invaluable part of the process.

Here are some recommended adoption books for children:

  • Over the Moon- An Adoption Tale by Karen Katz: This beautiful story about international adoption is perfect for even the youngest of children.  Loving parents dream about the night their baby was born far away and know that this child was meant to be with them.
  • Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born by Jamie Lee Curtis: A little girl asks her parents again and again to recount the story of the night she was born and how she came to be adopted.
  • Horace by Holly Keller: Horace is a story about a little cat who is adopted and learns just how much he belongs with his second family.
  •  I Love You Like Crazy Cakes by Rose A. Lewis: A mother travels all the way to China in this story that captures the love and joy of bringing a new baby into the family.
  • We See the Moon by Kari A. Kitze:  This book addresses all of the questions a child may have about his or her birthparents but is afraid to ask.

Reading good adoption books with children is an excellent way to bring to the surface unanswered questions and talk them through.  Adopted children can relate to the characters in the books and the emotions they are experiencing.  They soon learn that their feelings are normal and can be reassured by talking openly about them.

So send a good adoption book for children with yummy lollipop and a special note telling your child how much he or she is loved!
